For the last couple of years ERN’s annual 10K race has been impacted by weather conditions. In 2010, the route had to be changed and significantly shortened because of extremely icy conditions, making parts of the route unusable. Last year saw several inches of snow fall overnight resulting in a mostly snow covered route with slushy conditions in some places. This year we were only met with cold, slightly damp conditions, although a couple of large frozen puddles on the path about 30 meters from the start could have brought the entire field crashing to the ground but for the early warning system of screams from the front runners!
After appropriate avoiding action was taken, the rest of the run proceeded normally and everyone got to the finish in one piece, (aided by our excellent marshals, who even stopped the traffic by activating the pedestrian crossing on Duddingston Road West as each runner approached), before adjourning to Meadowbank for a hot drink, a bite to eat and the analysis of the results.
As always, a fun event and an opportunity to burn off a few calories before the evening’s festivities. Many thanks to Elly, Andrew-D, Andrew-S and his sons, and Murdo for their excellent marshaling.
