New owners, a new name, a new start and a new route brought almost 4000 runners out on a sunny but slightly chilly morning for the inaugural Edinburgh Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. In keeping with the organiser’s other events, 29 of them at the last count, this was a race with a soundtrack, a loud soundtrack! With stages dotted around the route at almost every mile, the runners were treated to live music, or in a couple of instances, a DJ, as they ran from Holyrood Park, down to Leith links and Portobello and returned to the park via Duddingston before heading through the Grassmarket to the Meadows and returning via The Mound to the city centre and the finish in Holyrood Park.
A tough, undulating route, but one that was varied and interesting enough to distract most of us on the tough bits, resulting in a number of well deserved PBs. Well done everyone!
As well as the huge turnout of ERNs running in the event, Heather Jones, Tony Wackett, George Maxwell, Elly Mackenzie, Ram Viswanathan, Ann Rautenbach, Andrew Simpson, Krista Black, Jo Forbes, Emma Silvey, Chris March and Murdo Macleod also did a fantastic job representing the club as marshals! Well done guys and thanks for the support on the course!
Andrew said : This was a great run in perfect conditions. The route showed off Edinburgh at its best from the beach at Portobello (which resembled California) to the heights of Arthurs Seat.
A few of us had undertaken some hill training with Sooz in the weeks prior to the race and this definitely helped with the climb up from Duddingston and then up to and through the Grassmarket.
The support on the course from the crowds and especially the ERN marshalls was fantastic and helped push me round to a new PB. It was also great to hear all the music all over the course which also helped to spur me along.
Given the fact you can run through the heart of Edinburgh it is definitely a race I would like to do again in the future’
