Tracy Paterson and Gillian Grant took part in the inaugural running of this race. The organiser’s aim was to begin with a half marathon in 2009 with an option to increase the event to a full marathon in 2010/2011 when the event has become better established. A good run was had by both ladies, posting excellent times and category positions.
Gillian said: On Sunday morning Tracy Paterson and I ran the West Lothian half marathon. It’s the first time this event has been held and I was a little bit apprehensive. Nobody I’d mentioned it to had ever hear of it and I had visions of a field of half a dozen club runners and me at the back. How-ever soon as we got there I was reassured, plenty cars in the car park! It was a lovely sunny morning, which was just as well because the race starts and finishes in a field with no where inside to shelter if necessary. This means no changing facilities but plenty of porta loos available.
Race route heads out of Bathgate, through the back of Blackburn (didn’t spot the media scrum out-side Susan Boyle’s house) onto the cycle path which was scenic, undulating and windy. Followed the path out for 3 or 4 miles then a little loop on the road which takes us back onto the cycle path and we followed the same route back that we run out on. I finished in 2 03 30. The race was run to raise money for a local
charity so a little fete with a bouncy castle etc had appeared on the field. Medal, T shirt and a goodie bag with water, banana, pens, leaflets and a reflective running strip were awaiting us, a free massage was available and Miss West Lothian presented the prizes. Such excitement.
I’d definitely recommend it for next year when the organiser hopes to attract even more than the approx 100 who took part this year.
