Following Eilidh and Gillian’s positive reports from last year, Murdo and Neil took part in this well established race. You can enter before hand or on the day (£1 extra) and at £7 is excellent value for money. The race HQ is set up at Penicuik High School and the organisation and registration was very straightforward with plenty of Harriers to assist if you had any queries. Changing facilities, toilets and showers were also provided. The race starts and finishes in a nearby park and heads out of the town, downhill for a wee bit before climbing steadily and at times steeply for the next 3kms. After Howgate the route is undulating, before dropping back down into Penicuik (apart from a short climb towards the end) to finish with a circuit of the track in the park.
The weather was foul; wet, cold and windy particularly on the exposed sections. Nevertheless the warmth of the organisers, marshals and supporters more than made up for it. At the end, warm showers and excellent home baking awaited the finishers. Results were quickly available and Murdo and Neil stayed for the enjoyable prize giving.
In short, an excellent challenging event, well organised and friendly – recommended although hopefully the weather is better next year.
